About this tool

What is Preeti and why convert between Unicode and Preeti?

Preeti is one of the most popular legacy Nepali fonts, widely used in Nepal for typing Devanagari text. Before Unicode became the standard, Preeti was the dominant font for Nepali documents, government forms, and publications.

Unicode is the modern standard for text encoding, but many systems in Nepal still require Preeti font encoding. Government offices, newspapers, and printing presses often have workflows built around the Preeti font. This converter bridges the gap by transforming Unicode Nepali text into Preeti-compatible ASCII characters.

The core difference is in how text is stored. Unicode assigns a unique codepoint to each Devanagari character (e.g. U+0928 for 'न'), while Preeti maps the same characters to ASCII keyboard positions (e.g. 'g' for 'न') so a standard QWERTY keyboard can type Nepali when the Preeti layout is active. A Preeti-encoded document looks like random ASCII until rendered with the Preeti font installed.

Paste your Unicode Nepali text in the input box above, and the converter will instantly produce the Preeti font output. Copy the result and paste it into any application with the Preeti font installed.

This page also handles reverse conversion — from Preeti font encoding back to Unicode. If you have old documents typed in Preeti font and need to modernize them, simply paste the Preeti-encoded text and click the swap button (⇄) to convert it to clean Unicode. No separate Preeti-to-Unicode page is needed; this single tool covers both directions.

Unicode Devanagari

नमस्ते

Preeti ASCII

gks`bt

The Nepali word for 'Hello' (नमस्ते) becomes the ASCII string 'gks`bt' in Preeti encoding. When viewed with the Preeti font, it renders correctly as Nepali text.

Preeti ASCII

gks`bt

Unicode Devanagari

नमस्ते

The reverse direction works just as smoothly. Paste Preeti-encoded text and click swap (⇄) to get clean Unicode Nepali back. This is useful for modernizing old Preeti-font documents.

Your text never leaves your browser.

All conversion happens entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Your text is never uploaded to any server, stored in a database, or sent to a third party. The tool works offline once the page has loaded.

Limitations

What this tool does and doesn't do.

Font rendering is not included

The Preeti ASCII output requires the Preeti font to be installed in your target application to display correctly. Without the font, the output will appear as ASCII characters.

Not all characters are mapped

The converter covers the most commonly used Devanagari characters. Rare or archaic characters may not be converted and will pass through unchanged.

No text formatting preserved

This tool converts plain text only. Bold, italic, font size, and other formatting from your source document are not preserved.

Large documents may be slower

While there is no hard character limit, very large documents (tens of thousands of characters) may take a moment to process due to the character-by-character conversion algorithm.
